Fortunate Accidents

My best friend is a murderer, but she’s one of the good ones. Not good as in crafty or that she gets away with it, even though both are true. Her kills are thoughtful. She only gets rid of people who you’d want dead, too.

I’m no saint either, but my husband didn’t die by my own hand. Sure, I played a small role, but he met his death due to his own actions. It’s easier on everybody if death looks like an accident.

Gabriela and I aren’t bad people. In fact, we both live such lives of charity working at the women’s shelter that you’d never even suspect our secrets. Even presented with evidence, you would argue against our guilt.  Neither one of us fits the part. But, the victims do. These men deserve it. The testimony is sent to us, walking right through the shelter’s front door, in the form of abused women and children.

I’m more of a guardian Angel. I carefully choose the women ready to pray with Gabriela, those women who can keep confidences. They believe she has a direct line to God. Through prayers, Gabriela knows who to get rid of next.

We aren’t the only ones causing fortunate accidents. The women involved are never suspected nor investigated, just as the men went unpunished for their transgressions. Their stories—and ours—reveal that murder isn’t all bad. And there’s a lot of work left to be done.

Averted Accidents

How dare he write me a letter and cajole me into reading his thoughts on forgiveness.  If he deserved any recognition, I would dedicate my next kills to his memory.  Has he made me into what I have become?  No, I chose to provide peace to other women of my own accord.  He receives zero credit for this.

I believe I am led where I am needed most.  My work at the women’s shelter is my base, but even my vacations do not allow breaks from the mission.  My work gravitates to me no matter the setting.

A vacation to Galveston steers me towards others similar to myself in mission.  A salon owner named Victoria crafts gold cards to be given to men who are then marked for special treatment.  When they arrive at the salon to redeem the card for gold service, Victoria knows exactly what treatment they deserve.

Another connection I make in Galveston is a priest, Father Jorge.  I help him with a parishioner who confesses sins that neither of us can let go unpunished.  In turn, he helps me solve a mystery as to why a house converted from an old church is still haunted by a little girl.  I listen and am her hands in rectifying a past wrong.

Angel and I also hire a new woman at the shelter.  She singlehandedly took down a crooked strip club from the inside.  Her name is Lucky, and I believe in the meaning of names.  After all, my name is Gabriela, messenger of God.

Many have I befriended along the way.  Those sharing secrets stay connected.  There is a level of both trust and wariness of one another, because we know all too well each other’s— and our own— capabilities.

About Me

My Bio

Writing has always been a passion of mine, and sharing my work with you is one of my greatest achievements. My writing career began in nonfiction, documenting my divorce story as a method to get the ridiculousness out of my head. Friends asked to read it, and I realized that turning it into a book was the perfect way to promote the divorce experience in a positive light. Currently, I’m developing a thriller series in which an underground network of women take revenge on their abusers and help others do the same. (Similar themes, right?) The first, Fortunate Accidents, is published. Read on to learn more about my work and feel free to contact me. I’d love to hear from you.
